The college teaches students aged 15-21 years, largely focussing on vocational skills.
Volunteers work with small groups of students to help develop their confidence and English communication skills in this friendly college. Volunteers design lessons that make learning English interactive and fun. You will work alongside local teachers to give young people the opportunity to learn from native English speakers which is extremely valuable. English language skills open doors to better jobs and access to further education.
The project is ideally situated to explore the exciting and vibrant city of Bangkok and the ancient city and temples of Ayuthaya, and the Bridge over the River Kwai.
Volunteers are needed to support local staff and improve opportunities for young people.
Volunteers teach at a large vocational college in the bustling and vibrant city of Bangkok. Students study practical courses that will help give them to gain essential skills for their future. A good knowledge of English will help give the students an edge over others and open the door to better jobs and opportunities.
Students at the college are generally taught English by teachers in a traditional style, with an emphasis on reading, writing and repetition. Whilst this is valuable, students do not have strong speaking and listening skills so their conversational English tend to be weak.
Your lessons will help the students to develop these skills and encourage them speaking as much as possible. You will design interactive lessons which make learning fun and engaging.
Lessons will vary depending on age and ability but may include:
The students are extremely friendly and love having volunteers who speak English, the extra support in lessons generates a lot of excitement and fun! The college is very welcoming and when you are not teaching, volunteers often find themselves involved with local festivals and activities.
You will teach for around 2-4 hours per day. Planning your lessons may take an additional 1 or 2 hours per day. You will have lessons from Monday to Thursday, leaving you long weekends to explore Bangkok and the surrounding areas.
There are usually around 1-2 volunteers at one time with a maximum of 2.
Pod is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults - please see our Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policy.
All volunteers are required to have a criminal records check, which we will arrange with you.

English language skills open doors to better jobs and access to further education and so English lessons from native English speakers are extremely valued. Volunteers are able to help children to gain confidence in speaking English and improve their communication skills.
English classes at the college often have a large number of students and volunteers are able to provide additional support to local teachers. The additional support from volunteers means that classes can be divided into small group sessions, making easier for with the students to practice conversational English.

Bangkok is an incredible city with a blend of old and new eastern and western influences.
The college is in a suburb of Bangkok, in the Bang Na area. This is close to Bangkok’s ‘Sky Train’ system, so it is straightforward to travel into the centre of Bangkok and visit the temples, palaces and other sights, enjoy the nightlife or just go shopping!
With long weekends free to explore, there are some fantastic options all within a few hours of Bangkok. Popular choices include the beaches on the island of Koh Samet, visiting the ancient city and temples of Ayuthaya, and the Bridge over the River Kwai at Kanchanaburi. These activities are best booked locally once you are at the project.
The teachers at the college will help to provide suggestions for places to visit and activities to do, both in Bangkok and further afield.
For the first four weeks, volunteers live in a hotel which is located just a few minutes’ walk from the project. You will have your own comfortable room with air conditioning, ensuite bathroom, WIFI, TV and fridge. The building also has a roof garden to relax on.
Volunteers staying longer than four weeks can choose to extend at the same hotel or look into alternative hotels and locations.
“From start to finish, teaching English at Bangna Commercial College proved a great project to volunteer on. The atmosphere in the college was very relaxed. The students were all very friendly and very keen to learn. The students thrived on praise, and really tried to use what they had learned. They were also very gracious, inquisitive, and had a lovely sense of humour.
The most rewarding part of my experience was seeing the pleasure of the students when they felt they’d achieved something - mainly an actual and sustained exchange with a foreigner. The placement is a fantastic experience. You don’t have to be a teacher or have TEFL experience to do it - but the latter certainly helps. There is a lot of support available.”
“The attitudes of the students put me at ease because they were so polite, welcoming, and eager to learn English. Teaching the students was very rewarding to see improvement and see them become more comfortable using English with a foreign speaker. Exploring Bangkok and the rest of Thailand was also incredible. I was able to venture out from Bangkok and see more areas of Thailand, such as Ko Samet, Khao Yai, and Ayutthaya.
It was great to see the comfort level of the students with speaking English, the grammar used, and the vocabulary level improving even during the short time that I was there. I also found it very rewarding to learn so much about the local culture. Because the college is located away from the city center, and through talking to the students, I was able to learn a lot about typical Thai life.”
“The college staff, students and support given were all excellent and made my stay a memorable and pleasant experience, one I never want to forget. The students were brilliant. Respectful, happy, hugely encouraging and keen to learn. During my time at the college I learned a lot about about the students, about teaching and about myself. I found the experience both immensely rewarding and insightful into the Thai way of life.
There were so many rewarding aspects of my volunteering placement. It was hugely rewarding to asked for help by students who were looking for support and accepted me as a teacher. The warmth and friendly way I was accepted into the college by staff and students was incredible and the sadness that I felt and that the students demonstrably shared at my leaving leaves me with feeling and emotions too difficult to put into words.”
“This is a great placement and I thoroughly enjoyed myself and felt that both the students and I benefitted wholly from the trip. I made some great friends and was introduced to the Thai lifestyle, language and cuisine (the best bit!).
The work is not easy and the days are long but the way of life in Thailand will surely captivate you and leave you wanting more. It was so interesting to see how another education system works and to not have to work within such tight constraints as we do in the UK. Students and teachers can openly be friends and the students at Bangna will look after you with whatever you need. This is a great way to see Bangkok in detail.”
