English classes often have a large number of students and so it can make a big difference to have support from volunteers who can run small group sessions with the students to practise English.
The students at the College rarely have the chance to meet and learn English from international English speakers and so volunteers help them to develop their listening and speaking skills.
The additional lessons run by volunteers provide a unique opportunity for students to excel at English and help the students build their confidence in conversational English.
“We love having Pod volunteers at our College since they really help the students increase their confidence in talking to foreigners in English. We are thankful for the time and effort that volunteers give to help us.”Teacher Poonsuk, Head of the English Department
Pod has been supporting the College in Bang Na since 2007, providing volunteers as additional English teachers supporting students in their lessons. The college has over 4000 students and over 100 teachers with subjects including computer science, marketing, accounting, and secretarial skills. The college offers valuable further education to young students from a mixture of economic backgrounds.
The English Department supports the education of around 400 young people in furthering their education from age 15-21. Many of these students will go into industries where language skills will be needed; English is the main language for the tourism industry in Thailand but in Bangkok it is also integral for international businesses and other employment opportunities. Confidence in English can open doors to new career paths or access to further education.
The project provides volunteers that help students build their confidence in conversational English. As English is important is the main tourist language in Thailand, English language skills open to doors to better jobs or access to further education.
For the first four weeks, volunteers live in hotel which is located just a few minutes’ walk from the project. You will have your own comfortable room with air conditioning, en-suite bathroom, TV and fridge. The building also has a roof garden to relax in. Volunteers staying longer than four weeks can choose to extend at the same hotel or look into alternative hotels or locations. Bangkok has an amazing variety of accommodations and so many people like to explore their options.
There are many sites to visit in Bangkok as well as exploring outside of Bangkok on your 3-day weekends. Popular choices include the beaches on the island of Koh Samet, visiting the ancient city and temples of Ayuthaya and the Bridge over the River Kwai at Kanchanaburi.
