Project Information

Volunteer role: What will I be doing?

You will be part of the Pod Under-18 Team running English language activity camps for schools in tropical Thailand. The camps are an exciting way to engage children aged 8-13 years and help them to learn English through fun sports and activities.

During the camps volunteers run small group activities at schools in the local area. These session may include:

  • Arts and Crafts
  • Treasure hunts
  • Group competitions and quizzes
  • Sports and games

The expedition is a fantastic opportunity to travel with a group and get to know the “real” Thailand, whilst also giving something back! Whilst in Thailand volunteers get to know the local area and the local community. Activities included in the expedition are:

  • Start your adventure at the beach on the beautiful island of Koh Samui
  • Explore traditional Buddhist temples
  • Visit a local fishing community village
  • Spend 2 nights at a local homestay
  • Shop at local markets and cook traditional food with your host Thai family

Working days and hours

Your time will be split between time to prepare activities and time to deliver them. On camp days volunteers will be in school from around 8am to 4pm with breaks throughout the day.

Other volunteers

There are usually 8-12 volunteers in the Under-18 Team accompanied by a dedicated Pod Team Leader.

Child protection

Pod is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults - please see our Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policy.

Why are volunteers needed?

The project is well established in the Don Sak region and there is a high demand for the camps from schools. The additional support from volunteers means that the camps are now able to benefit over 150 local children.

Volunteers work with their team leader to organise and run fun and creative activities for the children, helping them to become excited about learning English.

The camps supplement the children’s regular English lessons and focus on listening and speaking skills - this helps to build their confidence in using English in everyday life.

“Volunteers inspire and motivate the students to practise their English through activities on the English Summer Camp. It is a fantastic opportunity for them to learn English in real situations and support the pupils through educational scholarships.”Jah, English Teacher

How is the Teaching English expedition making a difference?

In Thailand, tourism is major source of employment and English is the main language used. Despite the close proximity to the popular tourist destinations of Koh Phangan, Koh Samui and Koh Tao, local communities in the area don’t have exposure to people with a high level of English. The camps are a unique experience for many of the children to be taught by native English teachers.

The children that attend the camps are from low income backgrounds and often do not have the opportunity to take part in extracurricular English lessons. The camps help the children to gain confidence in understanding and speaking English and in turn this opens lots of doors in terms of future opportunities.

Where will I be living?

The project is based in the rural farming area of Don Sak in Southern Thailand. The area is off the beaten tourist-track and so volunteers are able to become part of a local Thai community and experience traditional Thai culture.

Volunteers live in a basic but beautiful resort with exotic gardens, a lake and orchid field. Volunteers share single sex rooms. Each room has an ensuite bathroom. The resort is simple but clean and has a restaurant / common area, resources and lesson planning area and Wi-Fi.
