A two week English activity volunteering camp supporting school children in Thailand to learn English and develop their skills.
As a Pod Volunteer you will come up with fun and exciting ways to engage children aged 8-13 years in learning English. Your team leader will support you in organising and running creative activities for the children so they learn English while playing. This project supplements the children’s regular English lessons and focuses on improving their listening and speaking skills.
Experience local Thai life while supporting development, staying by the beach on the stunning island of Koh Phangan before travelling over to the mainland to experience rural Thai life.
Join the English activity camps project this summer and help over 150 children learn English!
The English Activity Camps on an Island is a group expedition exploring the beautiful island of Koh Phangan and the Tropical region of Donsak. The expedition is a fantastic opportunity to travel with a group and get to know the “real” Thailand, whilst also giving something back to the local community.
The camps are an exciting way to engage children aged 8-13 years and help them to learn English through fun lessons and activities. The main aim of the camps is to make learning English fun!
There will be three camps at schools on Koh Phangan and in Donsak. As a team, volunteers work together to plan and deliver activities which aim to make learning fun and engaging for local children.
The activities run on a rotational basis, which means you will have the opportunity to work with many children throughout the day. These camps may include:
During your first few days you will be given a full induction, cultural introduction and briefing for your trip. Whilst in Thailand volunteers get to know the local area and the local community. Activities included are visits to:
There will be 3 camps lasting 2 days each. The camps will run during school hours, 8.30am - 3.30pm. We will provide transport, lunches and water on camp days. Other days will be used for preparing for the camps, meeting the local community and exploring the local area.
There are usually 5-15 volunteers in the team accompanied by a dedicated Pod Team Leader.
This placement has been approved by the DofE as meeting the requirements for the Residential section of the Gold Award.
Pod is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of children and vulnerable adults - please see our Child and Vulnerable Adults Protection Policy.

Thailand had developed rapidly over the past few years and many of the jobs on the island now relate to tourism. English language skills open doors to better jobs and access to further education and so English lessons from native English speakers are extremely valued.
The summer camps are a unique experience for many of the children to be taught by native English teachers. The children that attend the camps are mainly from low income backgrounds and often do not have the opportunity to take part in extracurricular English lessons. Volunteers are able to help children to gain confidence in speaking English and improve their communication skills.
“The teachers and pupils at the schools love having volunteers since they help improve their spoken and written English and share new games and ideas with them.”
Eiu, Volunteer Coordinator

Volunteers spend 10 days on the beautiful island of Koh Phangan before traveling to the mainland to spend time in the tropical region Donsak.
Koh Phangan is a dramatic mix of dense jungle and hilly terrain in its interior and granite outcrops and beaches along the coast. Responding to the demands of tourism, parts of the island have developed quickly, but it still keeps its natural feel and has a strong Thai community. Koh Phangan is a laid back, friendly and fun island with an atmosphere that means people usually stay a lot longer than intended!
In your free time you can enjoy the beautiful island environment and its many beaches! An evening’s entertainment might consist of eating and having a drink on the beach, watching an English-speaking movie being shown in one of the bars, or going out with other volunteers.
Donsak is a small traditional town in a rural farming area. The area isn’t visited by many tourists so this is a fantastic opportunity to get off the beaten track and discover rural Thailand. After the liveliness of Koh Phangan, Donsak is a welcome opportunity to relax and enjoy a different side of Thailand. Free time is spent exploring local markets and temples and getting to know local teachers.
Koh Phangan Volunteers stay in a beautiful beachside resort in Sri Thanu, on the north-west coast of the island. Volunteers share an ensuite room with one other volunteer. There is a restaurant at the accommodation that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The resort also has WIFI, a TV area, space to relax, and is close to shops and bars.
Donsak Volunteers live in a basic but beautiful resort with exotic gardens, a lake and orchid field. Volunteers share single sex rooms and each room has an ensuite bathroom. The resort is simple but clean and has a restaurant / common area, resources and lesson planning area and WIFI.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the camp in Thailand, and would strongly recommend it to anyone. I was worried that my lack of experience teaching would make the project difficult, but the help from the rest of the group ensured we all felt confident in what we were doing. It was very rewarding hearing the kids speaking the English we had taught them that day, and seeing how excited they were to see us and how much they appreciated us being there.
The project was great for first time travellers who don’t want to do it completely alone. I felt safe the entire time, and as though I was seeing the real side of Thailand off the typical tourist track. The experiences I had were intensified not only by the beauty of Thailand itself, but by the generosity and welcoming nature of the Thai people. I made some amazing friends, and had some great experiences that I won’t forget for a long time.”
“Volunteering was an enlightening experience. I’ve taught before but this was entirely different, and a wonderful challenge. Mainly, the summer camp project was rewarding because of its genuine value. It was immediately apparent how much the children were benefitting from lessons and exposure to the English language. It was wonderful to be appreciated by everyone at the schools, and their kindness was very humbling.
The most rewarding things about the project are gaining a newfound confidence from teaching, and seeing just how much of a difference your involvement makes. I’m very glad to have come across the project, and to have taken part, because I feel it has opened my eyes in a way that few other things can. Whether you’re travelling alone, or with friends, sign up and you can be sure of an educational and valuable two weeks.”
“After returning from Thailand having taken part in the 2 week English Activity Camp, I can safely say that the holiday blues have well and truly set in! From the lively jungle to the golden beaches of Samui, and from the most pleasant and obedient children to the best group of teachers you could ask for, everything about the Activity Camp was fantastic and I would recommend anyone to do it!
I found it most rewarding being able to teach the children basic English whilst having fun. It was great to be able to put a smile on their faces! Volunteering at this project helps you understand different cultures whilst also giving great experience. The home stay aspect of the placement really helps you appreciate what you have back home. Enjoy every second of it because it flies by far too fast!”
“I now know that volunteering in Thailand with Pod was the best decision I ever made! I wish I was back there now. Seeing the children learn something new from us was great. Knowing that in some small way we have contributed to their future was really rewarding. Working with a fantastic group of volunteers was awesome, everyone pulled together as a team and made sure everyone had a great time.
As well as teaching we were thrown in to the Thai culture, learning a few key phrases and putting them to good use at the night markets, learning about traditions and visiting beautiful temples (one of which was surrounded by monkeys!) The Thai food was ‘aroy’ (delicious) and we felt so welcome wherever we went. I would recommend this project a thousand times! You will have the experience of a lifetime.”
