As the only English speaking country in Central America, you don’t need any Spanish to get by in Belize, though you can still practice your skills when you visit!

Volunteers can get involved in reef conservation, helping with monitoring and data collection as well as invasive species removal, diving in the deep blue waters off a private island!

Volunteers are needed throughout the year in Belize. Weather wise, Belize is warm and tropical all year. December to February are the cooler months and March to August generally typify the dry season with little rain and high temperatures. September to November provide the heaviest rainfall. The hurricane season runs from July to October - Belize is rarely hit full on by a hurricane but sometimes people on the Cayes (islands) have to transfer to the mainland. Temperatures average between 15-35 °C.

Things we loved: The very laid back atmosphere – it’s impossible to not feel relaxed in Belize, the local motto is “just go slow”, take that advice and you’ll love Belize too! The wildlife – Belize is a nature lover’s paradise with over 570 bird species and other wildlife such as monkeys, jaguars and crocodiles. The food - is fantastic, from the breakfasts of Caribbean fruits to fry jacks, you’ll be spoilt for choice!

Things we weren’t so sure about - nothing happens on time! This can be frustrating initially but once you’ve got used to it, it’s much easier to just go with the flow. The bugs can be annoying, especially as you move inland and towards the jungle areas so be prepared and take plenty of insect repellent and after-bite cream.
